Design Your Own Destiny with these Powerful Lessons from Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs is one of the most inspirational leaders to emulate, not only because he is one of the most successful entrepreneurs but also because of the words of wisdom that he left behind. In his speech at the Stanford University commencement the Apple CEO talks about his life, struggles, disappointments, setbacks, dreams and achievements.
Here are the top 4 lessons we can learn from Steve to succeed not only financially but in living a truly fulfilling life:
1. Follow your heart
Although this is a lesson that is familiar, people hardly listen and follow it. Six months after joining Reed college, he opted to drop out to get the true purpose of his life. In the words of Steve jobs,”I didn’t know what I wanted to do in life, and college was not helping me figure it out, so i dropped out rather than waste my parents money.”
This is a powerful message that we ought to learn from. Maybe you have found yourself doing something that you don’t really love simply because it is the norm or you are scared to explore other options. Follow your heart and trust that it knows where you want to go.
2. The worst things that happen to you can prepare you for something better in the future
Steve mentions that getting fired from Apple as of the most painful things that ever happened in his life. Forming a company from scratch and getting fired by the board is truly a humiliating experience. Rather than carry the bitterness and the pain of getting fired, Steve decided to start two other companies, NeXT and Pixar, making both a success.
This shows how we can make the most out of a bad situation or setbacks; a layoff, a failed marriage, a bad breakup or failed business venture. Steve formed NeXT company to continue doing what he loved, but Apple ended up buying the company and Steve got his position at Apple back.
3. Don’t fear death
Out of all the lessons we learn from Steve jobs, this one is the most controversial. Death is a reality that humans are scared to face. It is an act of bravery for Steve Jobs to talk about death after an ordeal with the worst kind of cancer: pancreatic cancer.
However, you need to learn to live each day as if it is your last day on earth. Rather than worry about life and what lays ahead, simply live each day of your life doing what you love. In the words of Steve jobs:
“everything fades away in the face of death, all expectations, pride, fear, embarrassment, failure or success leaving truly important things. Thus, remembering that you will die someday is a good way to avoid the temptation of thinking that you have something to lose, hence you have no reason not to follow your heart.”
Although Steve succumbed to cancer six years after giving this speech, his words will remain for generations to come.
4. Don’t allow external circumstances to drown your inner voice
It is easy to give in to external pressure. Our time in this planet is limited, don’t waste it living somebody’s life, says Steve. He shares his story about his decision to start Apple. Being a college dropout with no experience or capital, it would have been easy for him to give up and live his life like anyone else. However, the voice inside is what gave him the courage to trust his gut.
“Don’t let the noise of others opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary,” says Steve Jobs.
