What makes you happy?

Is it the latest gadgets? Being able to afford the hottest fashion trend? Or is it the ray of sunshine? Perhaps the sound of the rain? The aroma of coffee?

Wait; is it the laughter of your family and friends? It doesn’t matter what makes you happy. What’s important is that you are.

Some people are naturally happy, and that’s great. Some, on the other hand, find it hard to be. If you are the latter, and you want to be happier, you may want to do the following:

Stop comparing yourself to others.

One of the causes of unhappiness is the conclusion that you are not good enough. You see other people’s highlight reels, and you look at yourself and cannot help but compare where you are and where your friends are. You don’t know what’s happening in their life behind the scene. Remember, you are good enough. Perhaps you are not where your friends are yet, but you are getting there. Others are better at something than you, and you are better at something than others. That is how the world works. Believe in what you can do and be happy for the achievements of those you know. Your time will come.

Stop making excuses.

The more excuses you make, the unhappier you will be. Why? Because you know, deep inside, that you can do better and you can achieve better. However, you are afraid to take risks or worse; you do not want to disappoint anybody despite knowing what exactly you need to do. You make up reasons not to do something even if it is the very thing that would make you happy and help achieve your dreams.

Stop feeling guilty for doing what you want.

Many times over, you feel bad because you are following your dreams or you are taking care of yourself first. This gets in the way of your happiness and takes away your focus. Remember, you cannot fully help your family if you are miserable, or depleted. Don’t feel guilty for loving yourself or doing what you want. You deserve it. There is no argument there.

You keep regretting what has been.

The past belongs to the past. The moment you realize, the happier you would become. You cannot control what has happened nor could you go back. It is better to move on and focus on the present. Do not get stuck or teleport into the future. Life is happening now, and you would do yourself a favor by living it at this moment.

May this help you become happier moving forward. Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
